Sue Looyenga – Seventh Grade and HCS Curriculum Director
Classes Taught: Junior High
This is my first year at Heritage Christian School, but it will be my 22nd year as a teacher.
I began my teaching as an at-home mother with my six children, and formally became a teacher when the youngest entered third grade at the South Holland (IL) PRCS. I was there for four years, and then I began teaching at the new Heritage Christian High School in South Holland when it first opened its doors. ( Both are now located in Dyer, IN) . After three years at HCS, I moved back to my home state of Michigan in 2004 and taught the sixth grade at Adams Christian in Wyoming, MI. for three more years. Then I moved back into the high school environment and taught British Literature, AP English Literature & Composition, and Latin for the next 11 years at Covenant Christian HS.
I am very excited to be starting a new venture this year: teaching Transition Math, World Geography, and English part-time in 7th grade and also working part-time as the new curriculum coordinator for Heritage Christian School. I graduated from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL, with a B.A. in English Secondary Education with minors in Science and History, as well as an endorsement in Learning Disabilities. I received an M. Ed. In Curriculum and Instruction from Dordt College in 2011 and have served as a curriculum coordinator for Covenant Christian’s English Department and for two of the Protestant Reformed schools that have recently added high schools: Hope Christian in Redlands, CA, and Faith Christian in Randolph, WI. I have found that I greatly enjoy working with the “Big Picture” of curriculum in our Reformed Christian Schools over the past few years and pray that I may be used as an instrument of God’s grace here.
My own family includes six children- four girls and two boys- now all married to six wonderful children-in- law. I have 18 grandchildren, with one more on the way. And just a fun fact: half of my married family members are teachers! Among them are one college professor, two high school teachers, two elementary school teachers, and one teacher’s aide. I’m a charter member at the new Zion Protestant Reformed Church and enjoy reading, learning exploring new places near and far, and being with my children and grandchildren.
